Lesson 13

Lesson 13 - Stalemate

Method:

1) The teacher models a stalemate position on a demonstration chessboard.

2) The students model the stalemate position on their chessboard (in pairs).

Content:

"Stalemate" occurs when a player's king is not under attack, but cannot move any of his pieces. This includes the king which, if moved, would be in check. Therefore, if a player cannot move during his/her turn, stalemate is the result and a draw is declared.

A draw is declared if a player is "stalemated" at any time during regular play.

Follow-up:

Students practise playing against an opponent or against a computer program on the ChessMateOntario website.
