Lesson 7

Lesson 7 - How queens move and capture

Objective:

1) The student will continue an understanding of horizontal, vertical and diagonal.

2) The student will describe the geometric movement of a queen on a grid - horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

Method:

1) The teacher demonstrates the movement of a queen - a combination of moves between rook and bishop.

2) It can move backwards and forwards, horizontally and vertically, as well as diagonally any number of squares in a straight line.

3) The queen cannot jump over pieces, but may capture an opponent's piece by moving onto the square it occupies.

4) The attacking queen occupies the place of the opponent's piece, which is then removed from the board.

4) Observe student performance, assist in navigating the website where required.

Content:

Using the demonstration board, the teacher models the straight line movement of a queen, horizontally, vertically and diagonally in any direction.

In pairs, students observe and immitate the queen's movement on their board.

Students practise moving their queen in a straight line - diagonally, vertically and horizontally any number of squares.

The teacher demonstrates how a queen captures another piece.

Other chess pieces are placed on the board.

The attacking queen moves toward an opponent's piece.

It occupies the square on which the opponent's piece is standing.

The opponent's piece is then removed from the chess board.

Follow up:

Students then place the rooks, bishops and queens on the chess board.

Students play a game of elimination.

The challenge: students are to capture as many of the opponent's pieces by moving their pieces in turn.

The student with the most pieces left on the board after a predetermined time (e.g. 5 minutes) wins.
