Lesson 6

Lesson 6 - How knights move and capture

Objective:

1) The student will discover the unique move capability of a knight.

2) The student will practise moving their knight in an L-shape, forwards, sideways and backwards.

Method:

The teacher demonstrates the movement of a knight in an L-shape (two squares forward and one square to the side, in any direction.

The knight, like a horse, is the only piece that can jump over other pieces.

If a knight moves to a square occupied by an opponent's piece, then that piece is captured and removed from the board as part of the same move.

Follow up:

Practise moving the knight in an L-shape around the board. The teacher observes students to ensure the correct moves are being made.

Pick one square on the chessboard some distance from the knight. The student then tries to configure the moves necessary in order to land on that square with the knight, in any combination of moves.
